News zur Tour

Signature Events at iconic golf courses can create a myriad of gear storylines. We saw it at Pebble Beach where Rory McIlroy made a winning switch to TP5 golf ball and Tommy Fleetwood swapped his trusty 9-wood for a P·UDI 3-Iron to pierce through the menacing wind of Pebble.

As we transitioned down the California coast to Torrey Pines for the Genesis Invitational, a similar story arose: every club (and ball) matters at a demanding golf course in unpredictable conditions.

The two biggest storylines of the week for Team TaylorMade are Scottie Scheffler’s Qi35 7-wood and new P·770 4 and 5-irons for one of the best iron players in the world in Tommy Fleetwood.

Why would these two dominant ball strikers make such changes? We’ll let Torrey Pines tell you in this week’s Seen On Tour.

SCOTTIE’S ESCAPE ROUTE

Finding yourself in the rough at Torrey Pines South is nearly inevitable. With impending rain in San Diego (shocking, I know), one of the first orders of business during practice rounds was figuring out how to play out of the rough.

For the duration of his dominance over the last three years, Scottie’s top of the bag has been driver, 3-wood, 3-iron. However, knowing what was coming at Torrey Pines, Scottie worked with our TaylorMade Tour Reps to build a club that could give him the best chance advance the ball forward out of the rough.

Enter Qi35 7-wood.

“This course just screams out a club that can advance you forward out of the rough. The way the TOUR is setting up these courses for signature events demands being adaptable to the golf course. Scottie’s 7-wood is not only more versatile than a 3-iron out of the rough, but can be used on the long par 3’s.”
Adrian Rietveld, Senior Tour Manager

During his 18-hole Pro Am on Tuesday, Scottie hit his Qi35 7-wood seven times. Amongst those seven shots, he hit it twice off the tee on the Par 3 11th and 16th holes, out of the fairway bunker on the Par 4 12th and out of the fairway on the Par 5 13th.

From a yardage perspective, Scottie was looking for the 7-wood to fit the gap between his 3-wood and 4-iron at 245 yards. Launch wise his 7-wood is coming out at 11 degrees and spinning between 4100 and 4200 RPM.

This bunker shot on 12 showed just how high Scottie can hit it, with his peak height during testing living around 128 feet.

TOMMY’S NEW FLUSHERS

Tommy Fleetwood is notorious for his ball striking, we all know that. If you are a gear head like us, you also know he is notorious for some epic bag set ups, especially at the top of his bag. At Pebble, Tommy went driver, mini driver, 5-wood, P·UDI, P·7TW irons. We could probably write 1,000 words on how versatile of a bag set up that is, but let’s focus on this week’s bag.

Spoiler alert, it’s even more epic.

Tommy’s set up will be: Qi35 driver, BRNR Mini, Qi35 5-wood, Qi10 9-wood (!), P·770 4-5 and P·7TW 6-PW. You probably just got to the end of that sentence and said…a P·770/P·7TW combo set???? As I said…epic.

With the weather and length at Torrey, playing nearly 7700 yards from the back tees, even a ball striker like Tommy could use forgiveness. During a visit to The Kingdom on Sunday in preparation for the Genesis, Tommy and Adrian went to work on finding something more forgiving in his long irons.

Tommy tested a P·790 3-iron and P·770 4 and 5-irons and left with three great options to put through the paces during practice rounds. After walking the course on Monday, similar to how we explained it with Scottie, Tommy knew he needed to rely on his 9-wood to get out of the rough. But, once he saw how long the golf course was going to play, the launch and forgiveness of P·770 became a clear option he could take advantage of.

“On the range, Tommy hit every shot perfect so it was obvious that we needed to consider the P·770’s as an option. However, on course testing means everything in these situations. When we went out of the course, the forgiveness on mis-hits and spin/launch characteristics were perfect for what this golf course demands.”
Adrian Rietveld, Senior Tour Manager

Tommy also gained about 2-3 yards with his P·770’s compared to his P·7TWs’ which will be huge to deploy on the long Par 3’s and demanding second shots into long Par 4’s.

When we asked Tommy for his feedback on his new irons via text on Wednesday his response was: “They are ffffffffflush”. Yes, with nine f’s.

RORY'S TP5 DART TOUR CONTINUES

Rory went one-for-one in dominant fashion after switching to his TP5 golf ball at Pebble Beach. He continued his west coast dart tour during practice rounds at Torrey. On Wednesday at the Par 3 201-yard third hole, Rory showed off the perfect launch and spin of his TP5.
