For the first time in company history, TaylorMade engineers have delivered a driver comprised of more carbon by volume than any other material. In fact, Stealth 2 drivers feature almost double the amount of carbon compared to the original Stealth – resulting in a carbon ratio that sets it apart from the competition.

Driver design has evolved rapidly over the years, shifting from steel, to titanium and now carbon. All of this with a focus on lighter and stronger materials to optimize the CG (center of gravity) location. The goal is to increase the total discretionary mass and distribute it throughout the head to achieve ideal mass properties. With the Stealth 2 driver line, we have strategically reduced weight by adding the carbon composite ring, extracting mass from 60X Carbon Twist Face and adding more composite to the head with a nine-layer carbon sole. Again, all in an effort to increase the amount of discretionary mass.

For starters, the face on Stealth 2 weighs in at 24g – which is 2g lighter than the original. What’s the benefit? It allowed us to create a more pronounced ICT (Inverted Cone Technology) with a thinner face on the edges and a thicker center face. This design is engineered to spread speed around the perimeter, delivering an expanded COR area for an expansive sweet spot and boosted performance across the entire face. A key cog in the Fargiveness wheel.

From a top level, the science of why a carbon face is superior to titanium goes like this: Because carbon is lighter (and less dense) than steel or titanium, golf balls encounter less resistance at impact and retain more energy for faster ball speeds. By making the new carbon face even lighter, we're adding to the performance gains by reducing the material resistance at impact. So, the lighter the face the more potential ball speed.

Just for fun, let’s make a list of the things that weigh more than 24g:

  • A dozen pennies
  • Two AA batteries
  • Two compact discs
  • One slice of bread
  • Two chocolate chip cookies
  • 30 paperclips
  • A metal teaspoon

So, what are the benefits of having such a high carbon ratio? The combination of the carbon-reinforced composite ring, carbon sole panel, and carbon face allows for additional discretionary mass to be added to the front and rear weights. This results in better inertia without greatly impacting how deep into the head the CG is located. The strategy of moving mass from the center of the head to the outskirts most efficiently enhances MOI, commonly known as forgiveness – or Fargivness in the world of TaylorMade. Because not only are these things forgiving, but plain and simple: ball…go…far.

The new carbon-reinforced composite ring is the next step in the evolution of strength vs weight. The ring provides an opportunity to replace the higher-density and heavier aluminum ring (previously used in SIM2) with lower-density composite. This moves weight from high on the clubhead to lower and more strategic locations to optimizing mass properties.

The Stealth 2 carbon reinforced composite ring weighs in at 19g, which includes the co-molded aluminum threaded insert. This is 2g lighter than the forged aluminum ring in the SIM2 Driver family. The ring allows for the inclusion of a full carbon sole panel, which is crucial to the mass savings achieved in the Stealth 2 product line. The Stealth 2 Driver has a carbon sole area that is similar sized to SIM2 and replaces the full titanium sole of Stealth. Replacing heavy titanium mass in the center of the head (close to the CG) with lightweight carbon results in 2g of discretionary mass in Stealth 2 Plus and 3g in Stealth 2.

The Stealth 2 driver line includes three models: Stealth 2, Stealth 2 Plus, and Stealth 2 HD. Compared to their predecessors, the Stealth 2 models have significantly more carbon in their design:

  • Stealth 2 Plus has 60% more carbon than Stealth Plus.
  • Stealth 2 has nearly double the amount of carbon (97%) compared to Stealth.
  • Stealth 2 HD also has nearly double the amount of carbon (98%) compared to Stealth HD.

In conclusion, the high carbon ratio in the family of Stealth 2 drivers allows for additional discretionary mass to be added to the front and rear weights, resulting in better inertia without greatly impacting the CG location.
