As the sun dipped below Augusta National, Rory McIlroy's triumphant roar echoed through the hallowed grounds. We caught up with Nick Dougherty, TeamTaylorMade Ambassador and Lead Anchor for Sky Sports Golf’s coverage, as he reflected on this unforgettable "where were you when" moment, capturing the emotion and significance of Rory's historic victory.
“I feel like it was not only one of the most incredible days of golf, and Masters, but probably one of the most incredible days of sport.”Nick Dougherty
The pressure was immense from the outset with only five men having previously achieved the career Grand Slam. As part of Sky Sports' team, we felt the weight of responsibility to do justice to the momentous occasion. The nerves were palpable as we went to work, knowing the significance of what was at stake
For many of us who know Rory personally, who care about him and admire him not just as a golfer but as a human being, there was a deep desire to see him succeed. Rory is a genuinely likable person with a wonderful perspective on life and witnessing him achieve something truly extraordinary was a privilege.

Watching him play, I was in awe of his ability to hit shots that I could only dream of. He does things on the golf course that are beyond my comprehension. Yet, in the same round, he makes mistakes that even I, in retirement, would find frustrating. Rory is a flawed genius, both exceptional and average in different aspects, adding to how human he is and making him so exciting to watch. His recovery shots on the 5th, 7th, and 15th holes were remarkable, but his mistakes, like the wedge into the water and the bunker shot on the last hole, were equal parts unbearable and unmissable all at the same time.

The drama of Rory's performance was one of the most incredible bits of theatre I have ever witnessed. How he managed to dust himself off and rise from the canvas, carrying the immense burden of expectations at the Masters, is beyond me.
Despite a double bogey on the first hole, he found comfort and resilience, bouncing back with THAT approach shot to set up an incredible birdie on the 15th. How could anyone find comfort in an opening double under all that pressure? It’s so unrelatable yet you find yourself relating to what he’s saying – part of the paradoxical lure of Rory. Each year the golfing world has told the same story, and Rory faces the pressure of living up to the greats like Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. As he said in his press conference – what will we talk about next year?!
“The emotional breakdown on the green was one of the most powerful moments I have ever seen in sport.”Nick Dougherty
Covering those moments on Sky Sports was an honour and privilege. Seeing Rory convulse with emotion, releasing all the pressure he had been carrying, was deeply moving. My voice broke as I narrated those moments, feeling the significance and emotions that he was experiencing. The reactions of Nick Faldo and Butch Harmon alongside me, both emotional, underscored the importance of Rory's achievement. He has transitioned from a generational talent to a historical icon.
Rory's victory at the Masters was a "where were you when" moment. We were fortunate to be there, telling the story for the UK and Ireland audience. It was one of the most incredible days in sport, reflected in the record-breaking audience on Sky Sports Golf, with nearly 2 million viewers. It's always a special week and Augusta National is the most romantic of tournaments.

But this was not just a victory; it was a culmination of years of hard work, perseverance, and unwavering belief. Rory's journey to this point had been filled with highs and lows, and to see him finally achieve his dream was nothing short of magical.
The images of Rory on his knees, tears streaming down his face, will forever be etched in the memories of those who witnessed it. It was a testament to the power of the human spirit and the relentless pursuit of greatness. This was a moment that united fans across the globe, celebrating not just a golfer's triumph, but the triumph of determination and resilience. Rory McIlroy's victory at the Masters will be remembered as one of the greatest moments in the history of sport, and I am honoured to have been a part of it.
