THE KING'S GUARD COLLECTION TEAM TAYLORMADE WILL BE SHOWCASING AT THE BRITISH OPEN
Some towns were built for a good time.
Southport, England certainly fits the bill. Perched on England's northwest coast, it's been perfecting the art of the quintessential seaside holiday for more than a century. A grand Victorian promenade. A storied arcade. Fish and chips rapped in the day's news. And Funland, the amusement park whose lights have drawn families to the shore for generations.
This is a town that knows how to welcome a crowd. And this summer it welcomes the British Open, golf's oldest major to the windswept links of Royal Birkdale.
We conjured a staff bag and headcovers to celebrate the occasion.
Welcome to the King's Guard Collection.
THE STAFF BAG: WHERE THE CROWN MEETS THE COAST
Anyone can design a staff bag. Designing one that captures the spirit of the town hosting a major, without losing the pageantry the occasion demands is another task entirely. This bag fits the latter.
Our design team started with the palette. A cream body, wrapped in regal red and blue, finished with metallic gold hardware, gold piping, and gold stitching that catches the light from every angle. TaylorMade in bold red lettering inspired by a seaside carnival spans the body of the bag, an amusement park flourish rendered with the polish of a royal warrant. Above it sits a crown crest, a nod to the royal designation bestowed upon the course.
Then the town really comes to life.
Spend a moment with the bag and the details keep coming. The striped awning and glowing bulbs of a seaside carnival frame the panels. A merry-go-round circles the bottom collar in gold. Reach for the handle and you’ll find “Ta’ra,” the Scouse way of saying goodbye, waiting to send you off toward the first tee.
Open the bag’s pockets and the story runs inside, too. The interiors are lined in the newsprint of a proper fish and chips wrapper, printed with Southport-inspired headlines. It’s the kind of touch you don’t catch at first glance. It’s exactly the kind of touch that makes the bag what it is: rooted in TaylorMade’s championship staff bag DNA, and built with the meticulous attention to detail the game’s biggest stage demands.
THE HEADCOVERS: SIX STOPS ALONG THE SEASHORE
Where the staff bag tells the story of the town, the headcovers carry it club by club. Six headcovers in all, spanning the drive, fairway wood, hybrid, blade, mallet and Spider ZT, each lined in the same fish and chips newsprint that runs through the bag so the collection speaks a common language.
The collection's motifs are spread across the lineup. A carousel horse mid-gallop, the merry-go-round from the bag's bottom collar brought to full life. The seaside 99, the unmistakable swirl of soft serve and chocolate flake. The crown crest, tying the set back to the royal frame the collection is named for. The Funland-styled wordmark, and the seaside stripes running throughout. Whether it sits atop a wood or putter, every headcover carries a piece of Southport with it.
THE FINAL CHAPTER
The King's Guard Collection arrives at a moment worth making. The British Open is coming to Royal Birkdale, and this collection was made to meet it, not as a souvenir, but as a tribute to the town that has spent generations turning a day by the sea into something you never forget.
We've always believed the gear in your bag should tell a story. This one tells the story of Southport in the language the town speaks best. The language of the promenade at the pier. The language of the fairground lights and the 99 in hand. The language of a proper day out, carried onto the grounds of golf's oldest major.
